Your morning news roundup for Monday, April 14, 2008:

Aaah, the pleasures of spring in Montreal! Melting crap banks in the Turcot Yards, more &#%& work on the Main, and tons of newly uncovered garbage everywhere. But for every unidentifiable piece of trash on the street, there's 10 kids rooting for les Glorieux. For every inch of potholes on the island, there's 3 re-opened terraces. And for every centimeter of flurries still falling, there's 5 girls with bare legs, tabarnac! I'm a Montrealer, you're a Montrealer, it's good to be back, and here's your news! (10,000 thanks and pounds of smoked meat to our trusty music editor Jeremy Morris for manning the Friday morning brew over the last few weeks.)

The speed limit on the island is set to drop from 50 to 40 km/h in residential areas by fall. Also, motorists will have to drive 30 km/h next to schools and parks. There are only a few more loose ends to tie up before the provincial government gives its final nod to the Tremblay administration's 2-year old request. Major arteries, such as René-Lévesque Blvd. and de Maisonneuve, will be exempted from the new speed limit. The change means installing 3,000 signs at several entry points to the city, like bridges. A rare feat, Montreal has managed to rally all the de-merged cities to its cause.

Over 60 fire stations across Montreal decorated their doors and windows in Habs colors to support the team this week, but Mayor Gérald Tremblay has ordered the "graffiti" scrubbed off. The "act of fandom" has further split firefighters and the city, adding fuel to the fire of a drawn-out contract dispute. On Friday, several pressure cleaners were seen removing the paint at several stations; the jobs will be billed to the firefighters' union. According to association spokesperson Chris Ross, firefighters were careful to use water-soluble finger paint. However, the city and fire department (careful to differentiate the fire dept. and firefighters' union) say the "graffiti" has nothing to do with hockey and represents instead a "disguised protest" over contract talks. What do you think?

On a less ridiculous note: think you're a dedicated Habs fan? Meet 80-year old Jeanne-d'Arc Larocque, a season ticket holder for 55 years. She's cheered the team through 18 Stanley Cups and has only missed a "handful" of matches since 1952. One of her first NHL memories is listening to a radio report about the funeral of hockey legend Howie Morenz, who died in 1937. At age 25, Larocque bought a season ticket in the nosebleeds of the Montreal Forum for $1.75. Although she has seen Maurice Richard, Jean Béliveau, Guy Lafleur and Patrick Roy lead the Canadiens to victory over the years, her favorite player remains six-time Cup winner Bernie Geoffrion. Two seasons ago, the team honored Larocque by putting her image on season ticket packages. She's eaten with the Habs several teams and was given a sweater on center ice. Watch for her throughout the season; she's the woman who's under 5 feet tall, wears a team jersey that covers most of her legs, and cheers the loudest.

The Boston Bruins won game 3 of the series last night in a 2-1 overtime victory. No worries, the Canadiens will be back in shape for Tuesday! Go Habs Go!
