Your morning news roundup for Monday, April 21st, 2008:

Sorry for the delay, folks; I was hit with a veritable taster pack of ailments over the weekend. To compensate, I'm introducing a new section called "News Bytes" for all the odds and ends that warrant a mention but can't fill out a regular paragraph by themselves. Woot!

Kooky or righteous?: Most cervical cancer could be wiped out with the controversial HPV vaccine, suggests a new Canadian study. This would be especially true if provincial governments offered it free to more women, said the two University of Ottawa researchers behind the report. Dr. Robert Smith? (actually spelled with a question mark at the end), the lead researcher, admits that his "mathematical model is based on theoretical assumptions that may not hold up as more becomes known about the vaccine." However, he said that his predictions are based on the current effectiveness of the product. The authors foresee that 4 strains of HPV could be eradicated if 74 percent of schoolgirls and 20 percent of women aged 14 to 26 were vaccinated. Many experts support universal vaccination, but some critics worry that the HPV vaccine is being trotted out too quickly.

The former executive director of the Quebec Liberal party was arrested and charged with defrauding his ex-colleagues. Benoit Corbeil has been hit with charges of influence peddling (badass!), fraud and conspiracy against the party and the federal government between 1997 and 2000. The police said that Corbeil conspired to defraud the Liberals of more than $100,000 by authorizing false invoices. They also allege that Corbeil received a big chunk of moolah from a company in exchange for help in acquiring land owned by the Canadian government. An RCMP corporal said that the charges are not directly linked to the sponsorship scandal, but are part of a "parallel investigation." Corbeil will appear in court Friday afternoon.

News Bytes:

We kick off the first ever News Bytes with the unveiling of the STM's new magnetic card today. The card is designed to replace tickets and allows public transit users to buy either 1 or 6 trips. Tickets aren't useless yet; they can still be used in the next 6 months. The cards can be bought at either electronic vending machines or from ticket booths. By September, they'll be sold at all of Montreal's 500 outlets (including pharmacies and deps).

Montreal police have reopened a 3-block stretch on Sherbrooke St. West after a bomb threat early this morning. They shut off the area between Victoria and Grey after a "suspicious package" was thrown into the Crossroads Bar at about 4:30 a.m. An employee threw the package back out. A swat team disabled the package (epic!), which police won't confirm as a bomb. The fire department took over the investigation. Police say "one or several suspects were involved" (gee thanks guys), but no one was arrested.

Quebec Minister of Education Michelle Courchesne announced today a $17 million action plan against school and gang violence. The plan will cover the 2008-2009 and 2010-2011 school years, and will focus on prevention. The program is called "La violence à l’école : ça vaut le coup d’agir ensemble" and was unveiled in Saint-Michel, a relatively poor and multi-ethnic neighborhood where several violence reduction programs have been put in place.

Lots of ink and tears were spilled over the Bruins' 5-4 upset over the Habs on Saturday night. I was at a party where people were half crying, half stuffing their faces with appetizers. Then we all drowned our sorrows in Glenfiddich. Our boys will try again tonight on home ice: be there or be square!
