Your morning news roundup for Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008:

The Habs finally shook off the Bruins yesterday night in a dominating 5-0 performance, moving onto the second round of the playoffs. One of our writers said he'd put on his "riot pants, no matter the outcome." Something tells me he wasn't part of the group of young men who set fire to several police cars a few blocks from the Bell Centre. Just after midnight, post-game celebrations turned into rioting. Most of the damage was concentrated along Ste-Catherine St., where a handful of store windows were smashed and some shops were looted. A few private vehicles were damaged as well. Police arrested 16 people, including two 17-year olds and a 14-year old. They face many charges, including "breaking and entering a business, armed assault on a police officer, mischief on a police vehicle, assault and various bylaw infractions." A constable said that police review of the riot footage could result in more arrests. (Ed: This is shameful. Some eyewitness reports made it sound like some looters weren't even fans and had just joined the fray to steal things.)

Because you're the responsible Montreal dog owner that you are, I'm sure that you pick up after your pooch. But ever wonder what happens to all that poop once you chuck it in the park garbage? Well, neither does the city. Last year, Toronto found that 23 to 27 percent of its garbage bins was taken up by pet waste. One city councillor suggested that owners take the poo home with them, but that was deemed both unrealistic and sidestepping the problem. Biodegradable bags (like the Norwegian-made BioBags) break down easily in compost, but they are often treated like plastics when put out on the curb with garbage bags. Those with a yard can install Doggie Dooleys, a "digester" which strains and sanitizes the poop into the ground, but this doesn't help apartment dwellers. The project is still in its infancy, but the wave of the future may lie in San Francisco: the city is the first in the world to recycle its dog waste into methane gas. Says Michael Brandom, author of New York's Poop Scoop Law: Dogs, the Dirt and Due Process: "Fabulous."

News Bytes:

Montreal police were at the Cégep du Vieux Montréal this morning after receiving tips from American authorities that a shooter would be present at the school. At 5 a.m., tactical agents were positioned in the establishment. At 6:45 a.m., the directors evacuated, closed, and locked the school for the day. Police have left the premises, but they continue to keep an eye on the situation.

The game itself and the fans from the Bell Centre were great and friendly. Celebrating the joyous victory,in the streets safely. It really was a group of hooligans, who took advantage of the large crowds to cause damage, and violence. I never once thought I could say that I've seen the things I saw. Terrible, just nuts really.

I am a little disappointed that the police didn't expect this level of trouble Monday night. Most of them should be old enough to remember 1993 and I felt ashamed walking the streets after all the rioting. I hope for everyone's sake they learn to overestimate the need to extra security and overwhelm the streets with officers.

I would like to thank them for their bravery and persistence and hope that they can keep this city under control the next time this happens.

Yup, I feel pretty ashamed to admit I'm a Montrealer after that.

They should make the rioters pick up dog poop. On a cheesier note, that's my photo up top! Yay!
