Your morning news roundup for Tuesday, April 29th, 2008:

Habsmania is taking a hit all around Montreal today. Not only did the Canadiens lose 3-2 to the Flyers yesterday, giving the Philadelphia team a series lead, but the city is asking $500,000 from firefighters to clean off 63 stations painted in Habs colors (and for some equipment repair). Some stations continue to defy the city by having Habs-colored tarpaulins in doors and windows instead of paint. An administration spokesperson said that if the tarpaulins are not taken off, someone from a private firm will be sent to do it instead, and the firefighters' union will be billed for the trouble. Only the Habs banner is allowed for expressing support.

A 46-year old Sudanese-Montrealer and terror suspect has been allowed to stay temporarily at a Canadian embassy. Abousfian Abdelrazik is on a United Nations Security Council's list of suspected international terrorists. Because his assets are frozen and is on a no-fly list maintained by airlines, he has been stuck in Khartoum for almost 5 years. Abdelrazik's Ottawa-based lawyer said that his client went to the Canadian embassy on Tuesday morning (Khartoum time) and asked to remain. Eventually, the consul let him stay overnight. It's not clear whether the government has changed its mind about granting him an emergency passport and transporting him back to Canada. Abdelrazik's lawyer is expected to hold a press conference this afternoon to brief reporters about the case.

News Bytes:

According to a U.S. study, happiness is wanting what you already have. What?

Montreal councillors approved a $1.3 billion plan for Griffintown yesterday that includes "two big-box stores, a marina and 3,860 housing units." That quote should be extended by "in a plan that is sure to make the community shit its pants."
