Prime Minister Stephen Harper is set to officially apologize on June 11 for abuses suffered by former residents of native residential schools. The announcement was made yesterday by Indian Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl. As promised in the Tories' throne speech, Harper will make the apology in the House of Commons. Thousands of students reported being psychologically, sexually, and physically tormented in the schools, which were run by the church and funded by the government from the 1870s to the mid-1970s. Last year, a landmark $1.9 billion compensation deal was finalized to help 80,000 victims from 130 schools.

"The best and brightest" of Quebec's Anglo community leave the province because they don't feel like they can find good jobs here, a group representing Quebec Anglophones told parliament yesterday. If anything, the Anglos most likely to remain in Quebec are high school dropouts, said the president of the Quebec Community Groups Network. He said a study found that 61 percent of anglophones whose top degree was a bachelor's had left Quebec. The rate was 66 percent among those with master's, and 73 percent among the Ph.D-certified.
