Your morning news roundup for Wednesday, May 28 (or was it the 30th?), 2008:

Attention all bikers: The Montreal public consultation board is seeking input about a proposed bike path linking the North and South slopes of the Mont-Royal. It will cut through the cemetery and part of U de M campus (perhaps making it feel not so far away). A meeting will be held June 7th at 2 p.m. at the Outremont borough office and June 8th at 2 p.m. at the parish hall of Notre-Dame des Neiges Church. More info in the link.

Jean Baubérot, a prominent scholar from France who specializes in studying the concept of the secular state has said that accomodation in Quebec is not 'a threat' to the French language. Bauberot believes the prophets were wrong in France when they wrote that the Franch language could dissapear by 2015 and the country would be predominantly Muslim by then. He called such claims more 'provocation than prescience' and drew some similarities to our current accommodation situation, so such voices should be disregarded. "The important thing now will be to find the right strategies and establish guidelines (for accommodation) that are supple enough and leave enough room for most people to feel at ease in their differences," Baubérot said. Furthurmore many religious leaders have praised Bouchard and Taylor, but wished to point out that 'Islamophobia' soes exist and that we shouldn't deny it.

News Bytes:

The police have performed a major drug raid targeting drug distributors in the south-west of Montreal.

Advocates of the black-focused school made a case for more black focused education to help give the youth hope in a system that perhaps doesn't cater to their needs or give them role models to look up to.
