Your morning news roundup for Wednesday June 3rd, 2008:

TQS's new owner, Remstar, wants to cut five newsrooms in the province due to cost issues. Yesterday, during a testmony before the CRTC, vice-president of TQS Serge Bellerose said the network has been in the red, experiencing an average of 1.2 million dollars in loses per month since January. The network has lost an estimated 225 million since its launch in 1986. Peter Murdoch, speaking for Canada's largest media union, says that a green light for TQS to chop these stations will only open the flood gates, with other stations saying 'me too' and 'walking away from their commitments' to provide adequate local coverage. 270 media jobs are threatened by the cuts.

The Feds say it's just talk, but Ontario and Quebec have unveiled a new 'cap-and-trade' plan that has us wearing green together with a couple of tricks up our collective sleeve (or so one hopes). The plan calls for emission reforms, further integrated economies and a high-speed train service between our big cities. John Baird, Enviroment Minister for our Tory government says that the two Liberal Premier's - Jean Charest and Dalton McGuinty - plan is no more than talk and will change very little. But the Premiers say otherwise and ask 'why wait for other places like the States to reform' when they can go ahead and do it first (perhaps what they really mean is why wait for the Tories to do it on the national level when provinces can lead the initiative, cleverly saying that where Bush goes, Harper follows, but who knows;) In the plan is a carbon credit system where it will pay to go green, and polluting companies will have to buy carbon credits from green friendly ones.

News Bytes:

Ipods are gold to metro thieves, with youngin's around NDG being held-up for the MP3 players constantly. They go for the player instead of the wallet (how much milk money can one kid have?).

In Obama they trust? Will he be the next president? He's secured the democratic presidential nomination.

Cote-des-Neiges wants to go greener(don't we all in theory?).

Edyta,You are such an inspiration to so many qreutils and your personality reflects your wonderful designs. I had the good fortune of meeting you at Spring Market and look forward to visiting your booth at each market. I have containers full of projects from your books just ready to be pieced and quilted so many projects, so little time.

Okay, this tears it. I’m now moving your contact info from “T,” for Trixie Update, to “S,” for Super-Geek/Dad (such that the “super” modifies both). And as a new father, let me add my voice to the cheering chorus when I see “New Trend: sleeps through the night.”(I realize the post to which I’m responding is from January, so the “hooray” is a little late. But I just found this site a little while ago, and I’m going through the archives.)–FD
