Your morning news roundup for Monday, July 14th, 2008:

Greetings from Winnipeg, Manitoba, where the slurpy rules supreme and tailgate parties are perfectly acceptable. Here's your news.

Sick of the whole discourse on global warming? Well here's a doozy for you. A British group called the Optimum Population Trust would like us to confront the real menace: babies. Yes, babies. The solution? "If couples have only two children instead of three, they could cut their family's carbon dioxide output by the equivalent of 620 return flights a year between London and New York," says the OPT. Better get crackin' on that 60-pack of Trojans, friends.

"Des cordonniers mal chaussés": According to a casual survey, 60 percent of general practitioners in Montreal prescribe themselves drugs, one third have not had a checkup in 5 years or more, and almost half do not have a family doctor.

The Quebec Superior Court has ordered the shutdown of popular P2P site QuebecTorrent. The injunction is the first of its kind in the province and sends a strong message to other operators of illegal downloading sites. The Association québécoise de l'industrie du disque, du spectacle et de la vidéo (ADISQ) launched the lawsuit last year.

The new "permis de conduire plus," Quebec's new jacked-up driver's license, will also probably bear a maple leaf to show Canadian citizenship. It will cost $30 more than the standard license and act as an alternative to passports for crossing into the United States. The new license will also contain a chip that can be read from 10 meters away. In the chip is a file with the holder's information: digital image, sex, date of birth, etc.

"If couples have only two children instead of three[...]"

Say whaaaat? People barely have 1 kid these days. In QC, the average is something like 1.4. Besides, I was in the UK last month and with the cost of living there, I doubt there are many young families in Britain now that are popping out three kids. I wonder where those OPT guys have been all this time. Population is on the decline anyway.
