Your morning news roundup for Friday, August "vacation's almost over" 1st, 2008:

I'm afraid today is what my radio teacher calls a "death and destruction" lineup. Lots of crime and grim stuff, folks.

First off is the untimely death of amateur filmmaker Olivier Nguyen, who fell headfirst into a manhole at Querbes and Van Horne. Officials think the 26-year old slipped as he tried to retrieve something from the sewer. There is no evidence of foul play.

Richard Bérard, 44, has been charged with first degree murder in the death of his son's 17-year old girlfriend. Mélissa Beaudin was reported missing on Wednesday and was last seen with Bérard. Her body was found behind a shed about 100 km northeast of Montreal, along the road where the accused lives.

Two tobacco giants, Imperial Tobacco and Rothmans-Benson & Hedges, will pay the biggest fine for financial fraud in Canadian history: a combined total of $1.15 billion over 15 years. The fines are punishment for aiding and abetting cigarette smuggling in the 1980s and 1990s.

A woman whose job application for a police job in Montreal was rejected because of a previous shoplifting conviction won her case at the Supreme Court of Canada today. The court ruled that not looking beyond the conviction is a violation of Quebec's Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Expect spikes in heat-related deaths, more cardiovascular and respiratory problems, as well as the emergence of diseases, says Health Canada. The culprit? Why, climate change of course! Those at greatest risk are 65 and over, with summer mortality rates projected to be 2-3 times greater than for 15 to 64-year olds.
