Your morning news roundup for Thursday, the-week-is-almost-over August 28th 2008:

Hundreds of protesters assembled in downtown Montreal yesterday to voice their discontent about the much debated arts cuts in the Federal budget. Some $48.5 millions were cut from fundings usually allocated to culture. Some accused the Tories of censoring creative production in Canada, while the Bloc pointed out that the minority government was waging an ideological war by cutting cultural funding.

On Tuesday, a woman suffered a fractured skull when she was hit by the driver's-side mirror of an STM bus. This reopens the debate that was started after the death of Raphael Imer nine years ago, who was also struck by a bus mirror. "The height of the mirror on the driver's side appears to be a problem," coroner Paul Dionne had written in 1998 in his report on the death.

Two Quebec-made cheeses were pulled from the shelves after health officials found a strain of listeria present in them. Ministry officials warned consumers not to eat Riopelle de l'Île cheese purchased at Aux Petits Délices in Quebec City between Aug. 6 and Aug. 11. A similar warning was issued for Mont-Jacob sold with an Aug. 29 best before date at Octofruit Maître Gourmet in Ste-Thérèse.

After spending seven months behind bars and seven more in a transition home, former publicity big cheese Jean Lafleur has been released on parole for good behavior. Authorities have confirmed that Lafleur, who was heavily involved in the Sponsorships scandal, now lives with a friend. Lafleur was due to pay back the $1.5 million he stole, but has only paid $235,000 back so far, and has filed for bankruptcy.

Experts say that whether we go Tory or Liberal, Canadians will pay more for gas at the pump no matter what. The Liberals' Green shift plan would result in carbon taxes which would increase gasoline prices, while the Conservatives' mix of regulations, credit trading and investments would also result in a price increase. So, what now?

Why are these people so close to the bus drivers side mirror to begin with?
Gabby / August 28, 2008 at 05:52 pm
Sometimes the driver makes a really hard lunge towards the sidewalk and people might get the mirror in the face if they're standing in the middle of the sidewalk...

I've sometimes been crossing the street, and a bus
turning doens't wait. The mirror hasn't hit me,
but the rest of the bus comes awful close. It's
the sort of situation where someone could slip
beneath the bus, and the driver has already made
the decision and there's nothing that can be done
at that point.

At least a few of those times, I've been crossing
on pedestrian lights and those buses shouldn't be
turning yet.

You can't make any sudden movements when driving a big vehicle like that, which is why sometimes it may seem that the drivers don't do anything to avoid accidents. Also to be taken into consideration, the fact that the STM is insured up the yin-yang for possible accidents and the fact that the workers are unionized, which makes it almost impossible for them to loose their job.
Which brings to the question: why can't they be human and be a bit MORE on the lookout for possible incidents. It seems to me that sometimes they lack a bit of judgment and don't really make an effort to prevent getting too close to pedestrians (or especially bikes).
Plus, if this has already happened 8 years ago and a guy DIED, why are they only looking into the security issue NOW? pffft.
