Your morning news roundup for Monday, September 28th, 2008:

The Metropolitan Transit Agency (MTA) plans to raise train and express bus fees by 4,3 percent, according to budgetary documents obtained by La Presse. Starting from the end of next January, tens of thousands will have to pay $3 to $9 more per monthly pass. The hike is superior to the consumer price index and coincides with the highest increase in spending ever registered by the government agency.

Police in Malone, N.Y. have found what they believe to be the remains of a Quebec woman on Friday. Nathalie Fournier, 28, was last seen four years ago in a restaurant near the 15 with an English-speaking truck driver. 30-year old Adam J. Morris, a driver who was in custody on unrelated charges, led authorities to the remains.

A proposed rehab centre in NDG came under fire yesterday from neighbors who felt that it might attract more crime to the area. About 80 residents showed up to a meeting in a church on St. Jacques St. to voice their feelings. There are also concerns about centre promoter Rino Magi, 40, who is a recovering alcoholic, cocaine and heroin addict, and gambler. He might be extradited to the U.S. on charges of frauding old people in a telemarketing scam. According to police sources, Magi had also been protected by Montreal mafia boss Vito Rizutto.
