Morning Brew: April 24, 2009

The World Health Organization has expressed concern over 800 cases in Mexico in which patients are displaying flu-like symptoms. Disease control and prevention specialists are studying the illness, and have hypothesized that it might be a strain of swine flu. The WHO doesn't mess around: this is serious stuff, folks. Wash your hands, cover your coughs, and look out for any flu-like symptoms, especially if you're just getting back from Mexico.

If a weekend of 25 degree (!) weather is too much for you, head inside to check out Claude Tousignant's work at the Musée d'art contemporain in its last weekend. A Montrealer through and through, Tousignant has exhibited his work all across Canada and around the world. This retrospective collection will take you on a chromatic and temporal journey... and leave you right back at the Place-des-Arts metro.

Still waiting on that artificial hip? Well, you live in the right place: Quebec now ranks top among the provinces in waiting for joint replacement surgery. Now that we're arthroplasty pros, if we could somehow reduce waiting times everywhere else in the health care system, we'd be set.

And in much-anticipated transportation news, (little to) no news is good news: the Quebec road death toll from 2008 reached a 60-year low, partially crediting new laws that prohibit cellphone use while driving. How about passing a law for those geniuses listening to their iPods -- earbuds et al. -- while driving?

I think a good rendevous spot would be the litlte loop off of Golbow called Koch Lane. It is out of the way, several grills are in the area, the restroom is very obvious (and if it's closed, the woods are very close) and there will be less traffic. (Less traffic = less confusion. Such a beautiful weekend will bring scads of traffic in the developed area.) Upon using Koch Lane as a potential base camp, the more adventurous can take the trip to the populated area and enjoy the amenities there, returning to base camp upon exhaustion and/or unbearable hunger pangs. If there is a more suitable site closer to the massive crowds, well, y'all arm-wrestle to make that decision. Bring lots of water and bug spray. There are stores and gas stations on Hwy 6 (Racetrac south of Clay, a grocery store north of Clay, a minimart on Clay east of 6). This is a first-come, first-served area, so be flexible. (like, get into hopey-changey mode, hope that you won't have to change location!) A bright hunter-orange sign with LST on it would be the final touch. And, of course, the Texas and US flags. Hmmm, maybe I'll crash this party after all!
