Morning Brew: May 29, 2009

You might have been one of the half a million people put out yesterday by the bomb scare at Berri-UQAM during yesterday's rush hour - a mysterious suitcase was left at the station at around 5:15pm, and portions of three metro lines were closed down until 9pm. Sure, it was a crappy, rainy day and it took everyone about three more hours than usual to get home, but I'll applaud the vigilance of the people running our city.

Do you think you're funny? Well, if you want help honing your craft, Montreal Improv is
holding a free improv workshop this Saturday, 1:30pm at OFF Interarts, 5145 St-Laurent. It's open to anyone who's curious about trying out some improv in a small, supportive and friendly environment.

And if improv's not your thing but hanging out on the Main is, then you've chosen the right weekend. MainFest, Boulevard Saint-Laurent's first street festival of the summer, got off to a drizzly start last night. It'll go on throughout the weekend despite the rain; there's even some sun in the forecast for Saturday.

In other more permanent pedestrian mall news, Sainte-Catherine's has been closed to cars for the summer. Though the idea was originally met with some skepticism last year, businesses along the street in the Village saw an increase in business, as their terrasses could extend well into the street.

This Sunday, May 31, over 30 museums around the city will open their doors to the public for the 23rd annual Montreal Museums Day. Perennial favourites include the planetarium, the Biodome, and the Musée d'art contemporain. But don't be discouraged by the long line-ups; it's all free, free, free!
