It's official: La Ronde's Monster has been crowned the best roller coaster in North America. In case you haven't been on it yet (which is fairly understandable for anyone who is afraid of heights), the Monster is one of the largest wooden roller coasters in the world and a fairly impressive structure altogether. In Six Flags' Tournament of Thrills, it racked up 10,565 online votes.

Montreal's newest finished construction, the infamous Place des Spectacles, was inaugurated yesterday in a flourish. "I invite you all to now give a soul to this place with a powerful and simple gesture - a kiss," Mayor Gérald Tremblay told the crowd in a pre-recorded address. Cliché? Why not.

To continue with the engineering scares, Montreal officials now worry that underground structures might not be safe under some buildings. The Sun Life building, Square Victoria and Place Bonaventure are the first victims of this "potential higher risk".
