Morning Brew: January 6, 2010

2010 has got off to a rough start for Montréal. In fact, things seem like they're slowly unraveling. The last few months have seen an alarming number of incendiary attacks against cafés. The latest happened last night at the café Côté Est in St. Michel. Last night's attack was particularly brutal as the two employees present during the robbery were doused with fuel before the attackers left. Thankfully, the robbers were unable to light the café before fleeing the scene of the crime. This brings the total number of attacks against local cafés to 14 since September 22nd.

Over the weekend, a funeral service was held for Nicolo Rizzuto, son of Montréal's mafia boss. He was shot by an unknown assailant only a few days after Christmas. The SPVM suspects some links between increased mafia activity and the recent series of café fire-bombings.

On a lighter (but still downer) note, the 'tricolore' (or Montréal Canadiens), lost 4-2 against the Washington Capitals last night. It looks like Price has been unable to match Halak's four-game winning streak from December. The Canadiens have yet to win a match in 2010.

In radio, Ted Bird has quit CHOM citing 'creative differences'. He feels while CHOM's target audience is getting younger, he himself is not - who woulda 'thunk?

But wait - there is good news! The city has officially reopened Peel Street to traffic, and is contemplating new building inspection rules for the safety of its citizens. Of course, this comes as a result of a girl who was hit and killed by a falling cement slab at the Marriott Hotel on Peel last year. The reason for the delay is that all the slabs had to be individually inspected. While they passed the inspection, one would think it'd be better just to remove them, seeing as they are pure adornment and not integral to the structural integrity of the building.
