Nightcap: June 14, 2010

Posted by Erin / June 14, 2010

This is the first of hopefully many end-of-the-day news posts, and this story be a little gruesome, but raises questions about Montreal's cultures, and I'm sure someone will use the phrase "clash of cultures" before this story is through. So I thought it might fit with Midnight Poutine's M.O.

An Afghanistan-born mother stabbed her 19 year old daughter with a kitchen knife this weekend in Dorval, possibly for staying out too late.

The girl thankfully was ok, at least phyiscally, but police have already started calling it a "crime of honour." The mother may be charged with attempted murder, though she has yet to be evaluated by a psychiatrist.

This case is still in its nascent stages, but I suspect it's is going to gain a lot of momentum and media attention - for both good and bad. On the one hand, it may raise awareness about violence against women as well as honour killings in Canada (Twelve in the last decade, according to the National Post). On the other hand, I'm positive certain sub-cultures will be tried in the media, because of their fringe members.

This story unfortunately follows the trend of a similar one last year, when four Ontario women were found in a submerged car, in what was later deemed an honour killing sparked a similar discussion.

I discovered that this post, as well as
some other posts from here, have been
stolen and put on They even
strip off the Midnight Poutine
references, but do link to your photos
directly. Some of the Fringe reviews
are over there, too, which is how I
found the stealing.

Thanks Michael. I noticed this in my google alerts feed the other day. I'm not sure why anyone would want to follow up their escort search with a recipe on how to cook lobster or a news piece about honour killings, but we're looking into it.

Thanks for the extra set of eyes.

The Gazette article says: "The girl's mother, Johra Keleki, 38, is expected to be charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon."
- possession of a weapon? really? and would that be the said kitchen knife?
seriously. charges are in order, but possession of a weapon, i.e. kitchen knife? isn't that a little ridiculous?
