Maisonneuve Magazine's 10th Anniversary Launch Party, May 3

Posted by Amie / April 30, 2012

Maisonneuve 10th Anniversary Issue Launch Party"Like our hometown, this magazine is an energetic, frustrating work in progress, the product of little triumphs and hard struggles," - Maisonneuve Staff. Like our hometown, and also like a lot of the authors, poets, and musicians who will read and/or perform at Maisy's 10th anniversary launch party at the Eastern Block this Thursday. For $7 you get to read about a young Arcade Fire losing a battle of the bands, Quebec's obsession with Iron Maiden, and tone deafness as investigated by a tone-deaf music lover. But wait! There's more! Indie idol, Lief Vollebekk, Governor General Award-winning author, Kathleen Winter; and MTL International Poetry Prize long-listed Lizy Mostowski will be there too.

Everyone else invited besides you includes:

Deni Y Béchard
, whose debut novel Vandal Love (Doubleday Canada) won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize. He's got a memoir, Cures For Hunger, coming out in May.

Melissa Bull - editor-in-chief of humour website The Smoking Jacket.

Anna Leventhal, whose writing's been published in Geist, Matrix, The Journey Stories 20, and The Future Hygienic.

David McGimpsey, author of Li'l Bastard.

Dimitri Nasrallah, author of Hugh MacLennon Prize-winning Niko.

Saleema Nawaz, author of Mother Superior.

and Jacob Wren, author of Revenge Fantasies of the Politically Dispossessed, Families Are Formed Through Copulation, and Unrehearsed Beauty, three exquisitely named works.

The rest of the magazine you'll receive includes a smattering of articles on "nunsploitation porn", Occupy Toronto and why movements like it and the Arab Spring fail, DIY 3D printing, Burning Man festival, cultural change in the Canadian north, Toronto abattoirs, as well as new fiction by Giller Prize-winning author Johanna Skibsrud, poetry by Trillium Book Award-winner Ken Babstock, a comic column by Marc Bell, spot illustrations by Vanessa Davis, a trip through Maisonneuve's ten-year history, and book and music reviews as per usual.

If you can't make it out to the Eastern Block on Thursday, pick up a copy of of the magazine wherever cool magazines are sold or subscribe online and get it delivered to your door. Or you can just get a lot of great content for free on the Maisonneuve website, where dedicated bloggers and interns write about everything from Canadian Centre for Architecture exhibits in Montreal, to politics in the Maldives, to why the Chinese think eating noodles will lead to sex.
