Suuns unveil new music at Turbo Haus opening (with exclusive video)

Posted by Emily Hill / February 14, 2013

20130212-SuunsAlbum.jpgMidnight Poutine's favourite dark-rockers Suuns unveiled new music this weekend at a surprise performance at Turbo Haus. Montreal's newest concert venue playfully promoted the show as "USA Out of Vietnam + super secret guests."  Those who successfully procured the address found themselves at the foot of a nondescript office building buried downtown.

Sharpie arrows guide you through labyrinthine corridors following wafting marijuana. The Turbo Haus space is beautiful and completely unexpected, draped in velvet curtains and muraled by EN MASSE.

The USA Out of Vietnam performance was true to their cymbal-crashing psychedelia. Heavy and climactic, the venue rumbled with resonance you felt burning through your stereocilia. Lead singer Jonathan Cummins finished the set and announced, "You've all been wondering who the secret band is - well, it's Grimskunk! A true Montreal staple. Definitely stick around." Everyone muffled laughter and shuffled uncomfortably.

To our relief, Suuns took the stage as planned. The set was equal parts Zeroes, QC favorites and unreleased tracks from their upcoming Images Du Futur. The synthy cabasa in "Arena" sounded especially sharp in the intimate space. It didn't make a difference that we were a bunch of BYOB freeloader friends-of-friends. Suuns gave a performance as musically serious and polished as they would to a paying audience. Melodic and dark, the new pieces felt dense and exciting against the Zereos singles. Guitarist Joe Yarmush wailed with a glass guitar slide and distortion pedal. And what was Max Henry doing with the amp and the bass to give it all that grizzly fuzz? The short set left us all yowling for more. If only the album had been available that night, we'd have happily emptied our pockets to listen to its entirety. Lead singer/guitarist Ben Shemie pulled a hoodie over his sweaty t-shirt as he descended the stage. He scratched his head, "I'm surprised this many people came. I think we only told 10 friends."

If the suspense for their March release is too much to bear, get your fix next Thursday: Passovah is screening Suuns Europe 2011 a rock documentary from local filmmaker Andi State. Andi graciously supplied the following cell phone video from Friday's surprise performance.

Watch the video for Suuns' first single "2020" off Images Du Futur, out March 5th on Secretly Canadian.

Stay tuned for more details about the Suuns official release show in April.

I have been browsing online more than three
hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours.

It is pretty worth enough for me. In my opinion, if all web owners and bloggers made good
content as you did, the internet will be much more useful than ever before.
