Omnikrom Wins the Battle Not the War (Oct. 4@Academy)

I must confess to being far more interested in the iPod Battle as a cultural phenomenon than as a musical event. That an artifact - the illegitimate love child of a Mac and a Walkman - can have embedded itself so deeply into our daily (and nightly) practices seems far more notable than its role as an accessory for battle. That being said, the people who organized, participated in, and attended Wednesday's iPod battle at the Academy put on one hell of a good show.

If you missed the last two reviews of the event, the premise is relatively simple. 2 teams go into a wrestling-ring like structure and plug their iPods into a mixer. Each team gets to play a minute and a half of a song to get the crowd hyped. The opposing team responds. The teams trade 5 musical blows per round and then the crowd decides the victor by cheering. Oh yeah. I almost forgot the crazy costumes, old school wigs, and other assorted props the teams bring on stage to win over the audience (this reviewer was lucky enough to have a dill pickle shoved in his face).

In all, 8 teams battled it out for the heavyweight iPod belt and the tunes ranged from club tracks to classic 80s hits. Champions of the last battle, Peer Pressure had the most consistently crowd-bopping sets and even managed to overthrow international Battle superstars Teki Latex and Romain in a stunning semi-final. But Peer Pressure failed to find the right finishing move and ended up losing the final to DJ trio Omnikrom. How the latter group ended up in the final is suspicious, as it sounded to my ears like they lost the first round to a well-wigged duo. However, referee Annie Q's crowd-o-meter apparently never lies. I see a grudge match.

While I stand by the claim that an iPod Battle is more about the show than the music, I left the night humid from dancing and deaf from all the cheering. This is A Fly is On the Wall's 3rd battle in town and, judging by the crowd and the battlers, it won't be long before the 4th.

Cmon, man, we need to hear about songs! Most bizarre tune? Most unexpected and yet most crowd-pleasing? The strongest knockout blow?

Yes, I'm curious as to what 80's tunes would work in the battle?
