The Patients @ Main Hall, Oct. 7

Saturday is my Bands From Toronto theme night.

I start at Main Hall and in The Patients find just the kind of band I always hope to come across in my Pop Montreal perambulations. I am keen. This is a band that could really grow on me, and I want an album.

These lads are various degrees of mod and shaggy, all unified by that skinny-boy frame that is all shoulders. I mention this because they just look the part of ‘70s rockers, but naturally and unobtrusively, not like they’ve been styled. Which is just fitting for their good solid dose of grubby-but-tender rock. Classic rock of a strain that is bluesy and a little bouncy, off-kilter, plenty decadent, and with a kind of frayed-at-the-edges vulnerability behind it. With their wobbly, not-quite-tight, ambling tempos they were making me think a bit of Big Star, and the way that that band works a real pathos by always sounding like they are about to fall apart. The Patients are more pulled-together than that, but I definitely appreciate their un-slickness. I also appreciated lead singer Stu Bishop’s tight-pants/shuffling-boots/guitar-in-hand shimmies.
