Injuries, Comebacks & Goalies, Oh My! The Canadiens survive multiple hurdles

Posted by Andrés / January 18, 2011

20110118_canadiens.jpgThe caption here could likely read 'When Goalies Attack!'. That's exactly what happened last Saturday in a game versus the New York Rangers. In fact, if you watched any of the last three Canadiens games, you've been privy to some rather odd and rare occurrences - rabid leaping goalies included. In the last four days, the Habs played three games and are up another 5 points. Not bad considering the last two were back-to-back and clearly exhausting games for the team.

Exhibit A: Saturday vs. New York Rangers
Near the end of two long periods, Rangers goalie Lundqvist leapt onto forward Pacioretty. Pacioretty charged the net and was given a small shove from behind barreling him into the goalie at 17:47. By this time the Canadiens had nearly 30 shots on net. Lundqvist, clearly frustrated by a lack of support from his team, felt the incursion into his zone was the final straw. Result: Pacioretty gets an ice/blocker sandwich. The Habs end up winning 3-2 in regulation.

Exhibit B: Monday vs. Calgary Flames
The Canadiens are up 4-0 by the middle of the second. The whirlwind seemed to have put out the Flames, so to speak (rimshot please). Until they didn't. The second half of the game belonged to the Flames who kept scoring until they tied it up and forced the game to overtime. Such comebacks are scarce, as is the fact that both goalies were pulled before the end of the game. P.K. Subban, who had made some rookie mistakes earlier in the game, once again justified his presence with the O.T. goal. Habs win 5-4. Cage aux Sports fans get free wings.

Exhibit C: Tuesday vs. Bufallo Sabres
Four injuries in one period: all Habs players. Hit from behind, Cammalleri left the ice in pain with an apparent separated shoulder. Less than a minute later, Pacioretty gets hit in the arm by Wizniewski's power shot. He gets skated off the ice, taken to an ambulance and set up with an IV. Jeff Halpern mysteriously disappears and leaves for the locker room. Then Subban is hit with a shot to the back of the knee and limps off ice. These last two eventually return to play, but the status on Cammalleri and Pacioretty is not yet clear. Tired by a second straight day of playing and having sustained heavy injuries early on, the Habs fall to the Sabres 2-1 in overtime. Under dubious refereeing to boot. 1 point.

It's been altogether a rather strange four days for the Canadiens as the above evidence can attest. Regardless, they picked up 5 points and get a good three days rest before the next game in Ottawa on Friday. By that time we can only hope the news on Pacioretty and Cammalleri is positive. I also hope those referees were well paid for their oversight on Eller.

Sports injuries are injuries that occur in athletic activities. In many cases, these types of injuries are often due to overuse or acute trauma of a part of the body when participating in a certain activity. Players can make a compensation claim if they got injured while playing.
