When I was a kid, I was obsessed with WKRP in Cincinnati. I watched it every day after school on CBC. I used to hope and pray that one day, a network executive would be smart enough to make a new installment of WKRP, so I could see what happened to all my favourite characters like Dr. Johnny Fever, Jennifer Flowers, and Les Nessman.

Then one day, a network executive was smart enough. ABC began running ads for The New WKRP in Cincinnati. My kiddie brain almost couldn’t handle the excitement. I marked the day of the big premier on my calendar and waited for my dreams to come true. The night of the pilot episode, I slipped a blank VHS tape into the VCR for posterity, ate my dinner in the TV room (so as not to miss a single moment), and took my phone off the hook so that none of my friends could interrupt. At 8pm the show began; I couldn’t believe that my young eyes were lucky enough to witness such an historical event.

Half an hour later, I came to understand what Thomas Wolfe meant when he said that you can’t go home again.

This was the lesson I brought with me to The Kids in The Hall show last night at Place Des Arts.

If The New WKRP had taught me anything, it was that time changes all things. Unfortunately, The Kids in The Hall are susceptible to this rule. You can’t blame them however; they’ve already made their mark. They were one of the greatest sketch comedy troupes ever, and their work helped to lay the foundation for 10 years' worth of sketch. Mr. Show, Tim and Eric, and The State all owe an enormous debt to them, and I couldn’t imagine what the world would have been like had we not had them.

But while some of last night's sketches showed the brilliance of the Kids in their prime, others plodded along like rickety old jalopies. The highs included a sketch about two rat catchers searching for a mystical futon, a song from Kevin McDonald, and the story of a hateful, contemptible baby. The lows saw a character called Super Drunk (played by Bruce McCullough,) a superhero whose powers are only activated when he’s (wait for it) super drunk, and a sketch called Car Fucking, which was about car fucking. It was nice to see the Kids performing new material rather than resting on their laurels...but there was just no way that they could have delivered on the hype of their glory days.

At the end of the day, it was great to see the Kids still out there, but like Loni Anderson on The New WKRP, they are beginning to show their age.

More interesting was Paul Provenza’s Green Room at Theatre Ste. Catherine, where Jim Jeffries, The Kids in The Hall, Bob Odenkirk and David Cross sat around for an hour in front of an audience, shooting the shit and dishing out celebrity gossip (if you didn’t already know, Andy Dick got the shit kicked out of him by Jon Lovitz a few days ago. It’s probably all over the web, but hell, I don’t know how that thing works). Seeing these guys together trying to out-joke one another was wild, and it was especially heartwarming to see Scott Thompson nestled at Bob Odenkirk’s side, or Dave Foley and David Cross taking turns at the mic retelling the gory details of the Lovitz/Dick face-off. Comedy gold.

When I was thinking back to the worst sketch, my first thought was Bruce's Nicole Ritchie monologue... then I thought the putting a picture of a single blade of grass on the fridge for "thinspiration" was pretty funny. Then I thought that there's no way she could be pregnant because her body was so starved it'd eat the baby was pretty funny, too. So then I wasn't really sure if there was anything at all I didn't love about seeing The Kids in the Hall live. Glad you caught a pic preparing for head crushing action!
