Preview: Antigone at Casgrain Studio Theatre

20110719-antigone.jpg The Kaleidoscope Theatre Ensemble is proud to present their exceptional adaptation of Sophocles' Antigone, directed by Trevor Barrette, which will run from Tuesday July 19th to Friday July 22nd at the Casgrain Studio Theatre.

Antigone is the tale of the bloody and sorrowful events following Oedipus' exile from Thebes. His sons, Eteocles and Polyneines, fight for the throne and destroy one another. Creon, Thebes' new ruler, decrees that one brother is to receive proper burial rites while the other is to be left unburied for birds and wild dogs to tear and rend. No one would dare defy the edict, except for one.

"What I enjoyed the most about this experience was the director's perspective and the process," said Kelly O'Toole (acting as the titular character as well as costume co-designer). "He approached it in such an organic way... it grew into something very different and interesting."

The play is stylized as post-apocalyptic with military-inspired accents. This lends it an edgy, contemporary feel while capturing timeless themes of conflict. This is further enhanced by a unique focus on movement performance, a specialty of Barrette's.

The cast is fairly large, comprising of over a dozen actors who mostly come from a John Abbott College background. Thus, many of them are familiar with one another, as well as the space they are working in.

A very exciting trailer may be found here.

Please note: for people prone to epileptic seizures, there are some sequences with strobe-like lighting.

General admission is $10.
