Montreal Weekend Playlist 11/16 - 11/19 [Podcast]

Posted by John / November 16, 2006

Welcome. It's me (John MacFarlane) all by my lonesome on this one. Less bad jokes, less talking, and slightly less songs than recent predecessors, but still lots of great stuff. Apologies to The Mighty Boosh and Arrested Development for stolen bits.

Tonight (Thursday), local electro-jazz folks Kobayashi\ are at Main Hall with Vancouver hip-hopstrumentalists No Luck Club and locals Microtone Kitchen. And that's pretty much it.

Friday suddenly offers a feast of choice after Thursday's famine, so, uh, get eating? Alberta country crooner Rae Spoon is at Casa del Popolo with New York's the Feverfew. Local act Heroes and Villains launch their new album at Divan Orange with Famous Lovers and Ottawa's Relief Maps. DJ Champion's remix album get launched at the Saboteur's Ball with Ghislain Poirier and Numero at La Sala Rossa. Another local act, Frigid, who is indeed the DJ Frigid some of us know and love, has a show at Main Hall (also, shockingly, an album launch, I'm pretty sure) with Die Coroner and Pornorobo.

On Saturday, go see Troum, Aidan Baker, Tim Hecker and This Quiet Army at Casa, or check out three good Montreal bands -- Camaromance, Vicious/Delicious and Mia Verko -- at Barfly, or see Dat Politics, Kevin Blechdom and Menace Ruine at Zoobizarre. I can't help you any more than that.

Sunday features a great pop lineup at Main Hall: Tahiti 80, Hexes and Ohs and Brookville.

And Tuesday marks the launch of Pawa Up First's new album at Le National. Sixtoo opens. It will be "rad."

The Montreal Weekend Playlist:

(Note: an initial version of this podcast has Hexes and Ohs and Brookville reversed. Apologies.)

No Luck Club: (What Is) Pop Music?
Frigid: Give You Up
Rae Spoon: Living A Country Song
The Feverfew: By Now
Relief Maps: Stamp Out Fatigue
Mia Verko: L'imbroglio du scaphandrier
Kevin Blechdom: Binaca
Tim Hecker: Chimeras
Brookville: Summer Parade
Hexes And Ohs: Alive till Saturday Night
Tahiti 80: Big Day

What do you mean "that's pretty much it" for tonight? You forgot the launch of Ghislain Poirier's new monthly gig RELAXE LE GROS at Zoobizarre. All-you-can-hear gros beats pesants. Avec DJ Luv qui, apparamment, serait un "fin renard". File under: CHECK IT OUT.

I can't listen to this yet. But something tells me there are jokes about how you wish you had a cup in your shirt.
